Understanding Maryland Bridges

Maryland "implants" is a term often used to refer to Maryland bridges, which are a type of dental bridge, not an implant. They're a tooth replacement option that's less invasive than a traditional dental implant. While a dental implant involves surgically placing a titanium post into the jawbone, a Maryland bridge is a non-surgical procedure. It's a great option for replacing a missing front tooth since it doesn't have to withstand as much chewing force as a back tooth.

How They Work

A Maryland bridge consists of a false tooth (pontic) that fills the gap, with thin metal or porcelain wings on either side. Instead of using dental crowns to anchor the false tooth to the adjacent teeth, the dentist bonds these wings to the back of the neighboring teeth with a special adhesive. This preserves more of the natural tooth structure, as it doesn't require the significant removal of enamel needed for traditional dental bridges.

Procedure

The process of getting a Maryland bridge is usually completed in just two visits.

  1. Consultation & Impressions: The dentist will first assess your oral health to determine if you're a good candidate. Then, they'll take impressions of your mouth, which a dental lab will use to create your custom bridge.
  2. Preparation & Bonding: Unlike traditional bridges, very little or no enamel needs to be removed from the neighboring teeth. The dentist will lightly etch the back of the teeth to improve the bonding surface. Once the bridge is ready, they'll place the false tooth in the gap and bond the wings to the back of the adjacent teeth with a strong resin. The entire process is non-invasive and generally pain-free.

Pros and Cons

Advantages 👍 Disadvantages 👎
Less Invasive: Minimal to no removal of healthy tooth structure on adjacent teeth. Lower Durability: Not as strong or durable as dental implants. They may need to be rebonded or replaced every 5-10 years.
Quick & Simple: The procedure is faster and more straightforward than getting a dental implant. Not for All Teeth: Not recommended for molars or teeth that bear heavy chewing force.
Cost-Effective: Typically more affordable upfront than a dental implant or traditional bridge. Risk of Debonding: The adhesive can sometimes fail, causing the bridge to become loose.
Aesthetically Pleasing: The wings are hidden behind the teeth, providing a natural-looking result. No Jawbone Stimulation: Unlike an implant, a Maryland bridge doesn't stimulate the jawbone, which can lead to bone loss over time.

Ultimately, the choice between a Maryland bridge and a dental implant depends on your specific situation, including the location of the missing tooth, the health of your surrounding teeth, and your budget.
